In an interview with host Ryan Seacrest's morning radio show, he said that Casey Abrams is singing a Nirvana song- a first on the Idol stage. Born in 1991, Casey will do his version of Kurt Cobain's “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Thia Megia is singing "Colors of the Wind" by Vanessa Williams!
What do you guys think of Thia's song choice?!
There are many versions to this we found out: one from the original
the other, a Vanessa Hudgens version- which combined with the vocals, the instruments, the beats and the effects sounds like an utter mess. Totally distracting! Hope she doesn't try to do this one, or again hope the arrangement wouldn't be TOO off from the original.
So far, we're liking this version from Ashanti. Except for the auto-tuning, loved the R&B groove and Ashanti's phrasing-- this is probably the best version...
We wouldn't recommend the Disney version from the movie "Pocahontas" performed by Judy Kuhn because it sounds TOO theatrical- too Broadway. Unless the IDOL THEME is BROADWAY, singing a Broadway rendition amidst the mix would be 'out of place' and a very risky move.
Even this live version of Filipina icon, Broadway star Lea Salonga is TOO broadway of an arrangement for the Idol stage:
Nigel Lythgoe took time from his executive producer duties at both “American Idol” and auditions for “So You Think You Can Dance” to chat about tonight’s performance show, when Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler might perform, and how the contestants are dealing with a case of sinusitis behind the scenes.
For the first time in ‘Idol’ history, a contestant will sing a Nirvana song on tonight’s performance episode themed around songs from the Top 12′s birth year. Following a hospital stay that kept him from last week’s results show, Casey Abrams, who was born in 1991, will sing “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”
16-year-old Thia Megia will be singing 1995′s “Colors of the Wind” from “Pocahontas.” Nigel went on to compliment her talents by saying, “Her beautiful, clear cut voice. And she is choosing ‘Smile,’ ‘Out Here on My Own,’ and now ‘Colors of the Wind’ that are so plaintive and melodic.”
Ryan began by questioning Nigel about when Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler may grace the Idol stage to which he coyly stated, “they might perform. They might even perform before the finale.” Regarding the media buzz surrounding a Aerosmith reunion on the Idol stage Nigel deflected saying, “Oh, are they? I know that we have some fantastic guests for the finale. People are calling us now! The show has made such an impact that great stars are calling us wanting to be on the shows finale!”
